Earning, Spending, and Giving in Return!

Help me give my students some books and a variety of prizes to help teach them about money, how to earn it, how to spend it wisely, and how to give back to others in need!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Burns's classroom raised $203

My Students

I teach in a small, urban school comprised of approximately two-hundred sixty students. All of my students are eligible for free lunch and breakfast and about forty percent are learning English as a second language. Over fifty percent of my students come from economically disadvantaged families, but despite what life throws at them, they are resilient.

They are all very eager beavers and love to learn.

I want to capitalize on their eagerness and do a special project that will provide them with hands-on learning opportunities while teaching important values and life-long lessons.

My Project

My project will seek to teach my students to identify and count money, as well as learning about needs and wants, saving, and making spending decisions. My plan is to set up a classroom store where my students will be able to earn money for taking responsibility for their learning, doing their class job, completing homework assignments, and doing random acts of kindness to name a few. In turn, they will be able to purchase items at our store. They will be responsible for counting, organizing, and saving their earnings, as well as applying their knowledge when making sending decisions.

The exciting twist to this project will be to also teach about giving back and helping others in need.

The class will determine what percentage of their earnings will be placed in a special bank account to be utilized to fund a class-determined community service project. My students will get a chance to apply the character traits of compassion and kindness in an authentic and meaningful way all while practicing valuable math and financial literacy skills.

Learning about financial literacy in such practical ways is sure to have a life-long impact on everyone involved!
