My Students

I am a librarian in a low-income, high poverty school district where my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, I am aiming to keep things simple and provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences.

Our library is the center of learning for our diverse population.

Our students visit the library often, for a variety of reasons, and I want to continue to serve them in all subject areas such as English, math, science, social studies, and robotics.

Our elementary school is a large, urban public school with almost five hundred students. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over seventy percent of our students receiving free lunch. The ethnic breakdown of the school is 39% Caucasian, 37% Hispanic, 14% African American, and 8% Asian.

My Project

My school's PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention System) team has developed a school-wide reward system using Falcon Bucks. When students are observed showing the 3 R's (Respect, Responsible, and Ready) behavior, they are rewarded with a "Falcon buck". Students are challenged to earn twenty-five Falcon Bucks, which are exchanged for one "big buck". The administration opens a student store twice a month. Students bring all of their earned bucks to the store to purchase items.

The PBIS team would love to provide more variety of incentives such as fun pens, journals, and smelly erasers.

In addition to bigger prizes such as scooters, wireless headphones, and STEM toys that students can earn.

These items are both educational and fun related. Scooters and wireless headphones will be a major incentive for all students. The pens and journals will allow students to write and create in their personal journals.

Having these items in the store will greatly encourage students by providing access to things that they otherwise may not have access to. Additionally, having the proposed items in the student store will present all students the opportunity to learn about saving and delayed gratification.
