This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students are amazing. I teach in a low socio-economic area with a high percentage of single-parent households. A majority of my students are working at below grade level, yet expected to perform on grade level during state-wide standardized testing.
Having an engaged classroom makes learning more fun for my students.
Many of my students have learning disabilities or ADHD. I try to keep the classroom environment learner-friendly, which is difficult when most students claim that they "don't get" math.
My Project
Middle school is a difficult time for students. Motivating them to work and stay out of trouble is a challenge. They are more concerned with their image than they are with their work. The kids like to have their snacks and cool school supplies but don't always have a way to buy them.
Having an assortment of snacks and school supplies will allow the students a chance to earn while they learn.
The students will have a chance to earn points that they can redeem for a prize. This will also give them a taste of what it will be like when they are out of school and earning a paycheck. Learning that hard work and good behavior will be rewarded will help to ensure their future success.
