My Students
As a teacher in a high-poverty, low income area, my students face all different kinds of challenges in their daily lives. As teachers, we strive to make their learning experience a success on a daily basis.
One major life skill a person needs to be successful is possessing the ability to read.
We need to read every day of our lives. Whatever path you take in life, you need to be able to read. My students are working towards this goal as early as kindergarten.
My Project
Over the past 4 years we have been concentrating on teaching our students how to read. One would think teachers learn how to teach reading in college or graduate school but this is not the case. We teamed up with an agency who helped us overhaul our guided reading program and taught us how to effectively teach reading. The results have been amazing but our resources have been dwindling.
Students are excited about reading and when we send books home they tend to stay there.
We need to replenish our books so our teachers can continue teaching students how to read and so our students can practice their reading in school and at home.
The leveled readers would be helping over 400 students practice the skills and strategies they are taught in the guided reading groups on the journey to become fluent readers.
More than half of students from low‑income households
