This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are in grade K-5. I have 12-15 kids from each grade level. They have difficulty decoding grade level, which impacts all academic areas. They require Tier 3 instruction to help them bridge the gaps they have in terms of reading. Each grade comes to my classroom 30 min per day for intensive instruction in phonemic awareness, decoding, fluency, and reading comprehension. Many are visual learners and love comics.

Many exhibit difficulty with attention and remaining on task.

They all want to be successful and improve their reading skills but traditional instruction has not been effective in improving their skills.

My Project

As the students in my learning lab have difficulty with decoding and comprehension I know that these books will allow them to overcome their fear of text, and elicit their interest in the topic/subject matter. This will then allow them to acquire a love for reading. I know that once they learn to appreciate the written word they will begin to choose books independently and persevere in their quest for reading.

With these new books, I know my students will be more engaged and able to make meaning using the graphics and persevere in decoding unknown words.

My goal is to instill the love for reading at an early age so that they will then become lifelong readers. By having these comic books which are of high interest, I am hoping their reluctance and struggles with decoding will be easier to overcome. I also want them to become independent readers which will increase with these high-interest comic books.
