Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am a kindergarten teacher in an inner-city school. They are predominantly second language learners. We are a Title I school, in which we get state funds to support students learning in low-income neighborhoods. These funds are not enough to accommodate the number of classrooms and students we have. In our school community, many of our students' parents have little to no education and or do not speak English. This sometimes becomes an obstacle to provide their children with the educational support needed to broaden language and knowledge.
These students love to be challenged and are hungry for learning.
They work hard and always try their best to learn. They don't let life's obstacles hold them back.
My Project
My students are emergent readers and like literacy centers. I like to provide them with colorful phonics picture card kits. Color, rather than black and white, are most attractive to little minds. Our school does not provide color ink, which can become a financial burden on my family and me, as these kits require multiple copies (A-Z).
These kits provide phonemic awareness practice for beginning, medial, and ending sounds.
Adding a picture helps early readers find and isolate sounds from a set of picture cards.
These kits can be protected from wear and tear throughout the school year by putting them in sheet protectors. Sheet protectors can also be used as dry erase boards for letter and CVC word practice, which cuts down on copy paper.
