Mrs. U. from IN is requesting books through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
See what Mrs. U. is requestingMy students need high-interest, chapter book series (like the "Cam Jansen" and "Magic Tree House" series) that are written on an easier level, in order to have successful opportunities with longer texts.

Do you remember reading as a child and falling in love with the characters? I do, I loved Nancy Drew and I read the whole series! Once I knew her, I was compelled to read more. That is what these series books will do for my students as they are making their way from picture books to chapter books.
I am fortunate to work with the best intermediate students in the country!
My students are in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades and have been identified as struggling readers. My school is an urban school that has a neighborhood feel to it. Most of the families in this community have been here for generations. The students targeted for use with these books are 3rd, 4th and 5th grade students that have been identified as struggling readers. These books would specific help those intermediate students that are reading at a 1st and 2nd grade level. My goal is help them discover a love for reading; to get them to see the value in reading daily for enjoyment. With the right book, I will be able to hook them! As they experience success with one book, they will take their knowledge and love for the characters and read other books in the series.
Accessibility of books is key to student success. Kelly Gallagher, author of "Readicide," states that students who come from text-poor environments and educational settings are, on average, three years lower in their reading performance. That is not only shameful, but preventable. Studies have shown that students who are active, engaged readers (readers who read often because they want to) do much better on standardized tests. I want to create opportunities that inspire students to devour books! The series books I have included in this project are ones that are popular with the students at my school. However, my students, as struggling readers, were not able to experience success with these books in 1st and 2nd grade as most of their classmates did. However, with the progress they have been making in reading, they are ready to get to know these series too! This is where you come in, by providing them access to these books in our classroom.
According to Gallagher, "Students who read less, read less well.
Students who read less well, do less well in school. People who do less well in school do less well in the workplace and participate less in civic life." Wow! That statement makes me realize that getting students "hooked" on reading will have a positive effect on them FOR LIFE! My goal is to ignite a love for reading in my students and open up their future to successes. Please help me reach this goal with each of my students!
