This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Located in the heart of North Memphis, my school serves over 380 middle schoolers in grades 5-8. Every day students show zest and grit as they read, write, multiply, divide, type, analyze, draw, sing, speak Spanish, create PowerPoints, and so much more. Over 98% of students receive free or reduced-price lunch.
While on average students enter 5th-grade three-grade levels behind in reading, by the time they leave in 8th grade, they are on grade level and ready for high school.
My Project
My students have shown tremendous grit during the pandemic, showing up to Google Classroom each day and giving it their best. My school was proud to provide them all with Chromebooks, free internet access, great books, regular food boxes, and more.
The one thing our students are missing is quality earbuds to listen to their virtual lessons and respond clearly through a microphone.
Many of our students don't have any listening devices, and when they learn with their siblings, dogs, parents, grandparents, cousins, etc. all *also* at home, the sounds can get quite hectic!
We're hoping to provide each of our students with a quality pair of earbuds so that they can listen and learn in peace. Quality earbuds are hard to find--most don't have microphones, which makes it harder to participate in class. We don't know how long virtual learning will be our reality, but we want to give our students everything they need to do their best during this time.
