Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach reading to more than 200 sixth and eighth-grade students, many of who are second language learners.

All of my students are reluctant readers and finding ways to keep them motivated can be a real challenge.

This year our district introduced a new reading program that may be the answer to success for my students.

My Project

Getting reluctant readers to engage with text is a challenge. The new reading program has several different methods of engagement: listening and recording. First, students will listen to a lesson focused on their specific needs. Then, students are required to read aloud and record a passage for review with their teacher. This helps them improve their oral fluency.

Since the earbuds are so important to the lesson, and many middle school students forget to bring their supplies each day, having earbuds that are left at school means my students will always be ready for class.

At the same time, with COVID still a health and safety issue for schools, individual earbuds will help keep my students safe and well.
