My Students

"Every student can learn, just not on the same day or in the same way" is a quote by George Evans that describes my students perfectly! My nine students with special needs are in a full inclusion classroom; they are exposed to a high level of rigor each day as they learn sixth grade standards with support from both a general education teacher and an intervention specialist.

My students are capable and hungry to learn grade level material but need supports and accommodations to help them achieve the high standards set for them.

Our school is a Pre K to 8th grade STEM school located in the inner city of Cleveland, with an enrollment of approximately 400. All students receive a free breakfast and lunch.

We live out the "T" in STEM each day as our students' learning is enhanced with 1:1 devices. This is especially beneficial to my students as they no longer struggle to read and comprehend grade level material because the technology can read aloud to them. As sixth graders, with strong desires to "fit in" with their general education peers, this is priceless.

My Project

Earbuds were listed on the sixth grade school supply list, but not all students can afford supplies. Of the students that had their own earbuds more than half have been misplaced or broken and not replaced. My students spend a portion of their language arts and math class using individualized computer-based programs tailored to fit the skills they are lacking (anything from identifying short vowel sounds to dividing decimals using a standard algorithm to identifying theme in a literary text to multiplying fractions) and earbuds allow the children to be engaged in their independent work, not focused on what skill a classmate is working on.

When every student has a quality pair of earbuds, the classroom volume decreases and the room is transformed to a quiet, focused setting where each child is instructed on his/her own personal level, reaching their own personal goals free from distractions.
