Ms. Nawrocki from Detroit MI is requesting technology through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
My students need headphones to fully utilize the computer lab.

Have you heard the symphony of 30 computers going at once? That is what it is like for the over 100 students that enter technology class each day. The computer lab is in need of some headphones so that students are more actively engaged with the academic computer games they play each day.
The students I get to see every day are K-6.
Every child receives free or reduced lunch. Each class is excited to be working with computers (this is the first year the school has had a technology class). The class sizes range from 24 to 34. I believe they are excited to be working on the computers because they can find academic games that challenge them and also provide them with feelings of success. Academically, the school ranges from 1 to 3 years below grade level. On the state standardized test only 9% of the school (and that is K-6, 250 students) were proficient in math. The school just got a new staff and principal and already the school is making strides to bring students back to grade level and push them to be above grade level. The use of technology is an exciting part that the students look forward to utilizing every day.
As you just read the students are behind, very behind. Each student receives 40 minute block of technology each day. Not only are they learning computers skills like Microsoft office, mouse skills, and other computer basics, the computers are used for academic games such as starfall.com, studyisland, mathplayground.com, and multiplication.com. These games are very engaging for students. They help build upon the skills taught in class. Also, the games provide a way to help students who are behind, a way to practice skills they never mastered in past grades. Many students need an engaging way to master and build skills and this 40 minute block provides this. With the addition of headphones to the computer lab, students will be able to fully focused on the game they are playing without getting distracted by the noises of other computers.
Without a doubt the headphones will allow students to build their knowledge.
The students are wonderful and are eager to learn. Unfortunately the computer lab is not fully equipped yet to optimize their learning. Adding headphones will make a world of difference in allowing students to concentrate on the academic game they are playing without the symphony of the other computers. Please consider donating and help these students reach above and beyond their grade level!
