Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students attend a high poverty, public, elementary school in Pennsylvania. We are a Title I, low income school. Since many of our students come from a home where food is not always plentiful, all students are served breakfast in the classroom.
We are heavily populated with English language learners.
Having such a large ELL population makes each classroom very diverse and full of life, but it also comes with a fair share of challenges. Despite the challenges my students face, they come each day with a great attitude.
My classroom is an inclusive classroom with support from special education teachers, as well as ESOL teachers. Every one of my children is capable of succeeding and surpassing every academic goal set for them.
My Project
Listening skills are an important part of communication skills. Children need to focus on learning listening skills, even more so at the elementary level.
It has been said that listening has three parts to it: (1) hearing the speaker, (2) understanding what the speaker is saying and (3) making a judgment based on that understanding.
With a set of several wonderful book and CD sets and new headphones, I could broaden my classroom listening and technology center. Each book set has one CD and a book. It is important for our students to become active listeners at a young age. These resources would help me do that with my kindergarten class.
