This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine a classroom filled with eager kindergarteners listening to a story on CD at their desk with a personal CD player! Students will have the opportunity to read along at their own pace without the interruptions and distractions of other students during independent work time.
My kindergarten students are very active and curious.
They are second language learners with different degrees of school experiences. They come from homes where their parents may or may not speak English. Our school has a large population of second language learners as well as students who don't always have access to needed materials and resources.
My Project
Personal CD players will enable my students to listen to engaging stories on CD without being interrupted by others. My students will not have to depend on me to read them a story for pleasure. Due to a full day's schedule, I am not always able to read them a story aloud. With portable CD players, they will be able to choose the books they want to read and listen to them during our independent work time. During this time, students get to choose their learning activity. Having them listen to stories on CD helps them acquire language and will expose them to vocabulary that they may not be exposed to at any other time.
Reading is so important and I want it to be a pleasurable activity for my students.
Our school library is closed this year because of cuts to staffing, and my students have not had the opportunity to discover the fun of reading by check out their own books. By funding this project, my students can listen to books of their choosing everyday instead of just when time permits.
