My students need stools, a table, an easel, and a lectern for an inviting environment where they become inspired to read for 30 minutes during SSR. By creating this cozy modernized reading center students will want to optimize their reading during SSR, recess & lunch!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students are a great group of kids that are in the "tween" and teenage years which keeps learning interesting everyday. There is never a dull moment in class, and the student inquiry and participation is always engaging. They have a wide range of abilities, interests, and priorities. Overall, my students worry about taking care of their environment and each other. Some of my students come from low-income families where reading isn't always prioritized. Additionally, some of my students are ELD learners where the primary language spoken at home is not English. Some students are natural readers, and love learning; however, others find reading a challenge. I have noticed that in recent years, students are not motivated to read, even when they are given the time in class.
When given the right opportunity, my students really flourish, and exceed even their own expectations.
Therefore, my goal is to foster a more reader-friendly environment, thus empowering my students in their own learning.
My Project
It is my thought and hope that by creating a cozy modernized reading center, students would be inspired to read beyond the 30 minutes of SSR, and that some would extend that time to break time and lunch time, as well. Some students simply want a quiet corner where they can nestle in with a book and for some students, my classroom is the only place where they can do that. This investment is beyond the furniture, it is an investment for our students' future.
The furniture and materials that I am requesting are to modernize a basic reading area in my classroom to a cozy reading area for my eighth grade students to enjoy.
The tall table, chairs, and bookshelves will help set the mood for students to bring a friend to read, and discuss book themes as is done by college students who study in local cafes. The lectern podium will also help create an environment similar to that of a college classroom where it facilitates the teacher's instruction by providing an area where learning materials are easily accessible to the teacher and facilitates the delivery of instruction. The easel stand for the poster paper will not only help to display notes created for my lessons, but also students' work during presentations.
It is my thought and great desire that by providing this modernized environment for my students, they will have a greater sense of motivation and engagement in reading, inquiring, and collaborating with other students, thus growing in their own learning.
