My fourth graders are ravenous readers who try to spend at least an hour each day independently reading books at home and in school. They need more books that match the various genres we study in class to feed their insatiable literary appetites!
These kids are motivated, hard-working, and eager students who really love to read.
Many of them are English language learners who come from low-income families. They take school very seriously and love to impress adults with how smart and talented they are!
My Project
Access to a high-quality texts such as Number the Stars by Lois Lowry and What Was the Gold Rush? by Joan Holub is a key component in building students' comprehension and engagement in becoming lifelong readers. The plastic holders will also allow my students to protect and quickly view their mini reading strategies charts as they read. They might, for example, want to work on how the author uses setting to create mood. The students could then select the corresponding quarter-sheet reference chart from their reading folder and place it in the plastic frame to help guide them as they read. Thinking deeply about fiction and nonfiction texts is a major requirement for being prepared for standardized testing, so lots of experience with these genres is critical.
Your support will help build a classroom library that supports the interests and abilities of all my students.
These new books will help further develop a love of reading as well as the skills my students need to tackle standardized tests.
