This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Do you love curling up with a good book on a comfortable couch? The majority of my students are below grade level in reading but they have recently caught the bug. Their love for reading is growing and to encourage this essential life skill I want to set up comfortable space for them to curl up in.
My students live throughout an urban environment in Missouri.
Around 80% of them are Hispanic English language learners. Our school is dual language which means the kids learn in both English and Spanish. Many of their parents are illiterate and most of the students are still developing basic reading skills in third grade. If they do not catch up to grade level now, it is likely they never will and for the rest of their lives be behind in reading. They realize that they are behind academically and the challenges they face in order to reach their goals. My students are hard working and eager to learn.
My Project
In third grade we use many different rewards, systems, procedures to develop and encourage a love of reading. The students are beginning to track their progress towards their reading goals and are truly becoming readers. In order for them to develop a comfortable and fun feeling while reading I would like to have spaces available outside of their desks for them to read in. I am requesting a set of 5 medium pillows and 2 large pillows for our classroom so my students can lounge around while reading. Hopefully through being comfortable in their environment they will begin to have a passion for reading and all that it can do for them.
By encouraging my students in their reading you will be helping set them up for a lifetime of academic success.
If they do not develop key traits and mindsets needed to be readers now, they may never be successful in school. Creating readers will create lifelong learners.
