Have you ever wanted to grab a trusty tool only to find that it wasn't there? My eager readers are missing out on reading practice when our reading tools aren't there. They also need to apply these skills to writing. I switched schools and grade levels, so I do not have the materials I need.
My students are eager learners from hard working families.
We are in an urban area, but on the fringe. Each year our financial needy students increase.
First graders need the foundation built on practicing phonics skills, word sorting, and just writing their words can put these skills in place. When we have a chance to practice these skill at school, students become better readers and it is easier for them to read at home. Using materials they can hold and manipulate greatly enhances their learning. I want my students to develop confidence in their reading and writing.
My Project
Our school is working very hard on reading and writing skills. These materials will help students in both areas. Students will mainly be using the materials for phonics work. The students will make words with magnets. Then the students can practice their words on white boards or their desks. I will use the table top easel during small and large groups to display words to work on. The chart will help us sort words and use sentence strips to put in story order. As they learn the words they will be able to read the words and incorporate them in their working vocabulary. They will then also be able to use them correctly when they write. Each time they learn new phonics skills, it will help with other words in the word families associated with the skill. The more words students have at their disposal, the more confident they are in all subjects.
I moved schools this year and had to leave behind my reading tools behind.
I have been trying to use letter beads for word work. The beads aren't working out because the magnetic letters are color coded for vowels and consonants to help visualize how to spell the word. The dry erase crayons won't dry out or leave a black residue on the desk or white board as we use them like the markers. I care about my students and want them to feel good about their reading and writing. Thank you.
