My students need to be able to read stories written by the same author, Christopher Paul Curtis, so that they can see the similarities and differences between the themes, characters and settings.
My students are avid readers that can't wait to get their hands on a book! When we read as a classroom, my students are learning about theme, character traits, setting, main idea and just the beauty of falling in love with an author or genre of a book.
My students come from high poverty areas and are unable to buy themselves their own individual books.
When a child is able to hold a book of their own, store it in their desk, and be able to turn the pages, anticipating what comes next, there is no other great feeling.
My students are hard workers and are so eager to learn. They want to be able to take the knowledge that they learn from the stories we read together and turn it into book discussions and writing stories. The amazing amount of learning that comes from the simple fact of having your own book and reading it together is immeasurable.
My Project
If my students were able to have a series of books written by the same author, they would be able to see the range of characters and settings that an author can create with in various books. They can learn to fall in love with an author. Reading builds their imagination, develops their critical thinking skills, improves their communication skills as well as increase their vocabulary skills. Bud, Not Buddy, The Mighty Miss Malone, and The Watson's Go to Birmingham are three stories that incorporate both history and literature.
These books written by Christopher Paul Curtis are historical fiction and expose my students to the history of our country which is an added bonus to reading these books.
