In my classroom, you will find disadvantaged students eager and motivated to learn. Many of my students have shown a desire to create a Digestive System model. Like always, I have to break the bad news to the students and inform them that we do not have the necessary supplies for the project
My school is located in Detroit.
Many of my students receive free lunch and parental support is non-existent. Since many of our students are labeled disadvantaged, our school has created a close-knit environment that helps students thrive despite their economical level status.
I am requesting modeling clay, yarn, chenille stems, wiggly eyes, assorted pom poms, foam beads, feathers and the fadeless designer paper assorted sheets to help my students create the 3-D Digestive System model. You may ask how are my students and I going to get this project moving. Before creating the Digestive System model, the students are going to take an inquiry-based journey through the Digestive System. Through their Digestive System journey, students will be asked open-ended and closed-ended questions. Next, students will work in cooperative learning groups while playing learning games such as solving digestive system riddles and trivia. Lastly, students will collaboratively create a hands-on simulation of how food moves through the Digestive System. The culminating activity will be using the art supplies to create a Digestive System model.
If my students and I were to receive the modeling clay, yarn, chenille stems, wiggly eyes, assorted pom poms, foam beads, feathers and the fadeless designer paper assorted sheets, they will have the necessary art supplies to create a 3-D model of the Digestive System vs.
a 2-D model of the Digestive System. Thus, the project will bring more innovative hands-on learning activities into my classroom which will increase student engagement as well as promote academic achievement.
