Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students come from a very diverse, culturally rich background that makes up for their apparent dire financial state. However they have very little opportunity to bring their cultural expression into the classroom in a viable way that will be understood, appreciated and holistically integrated.
The favorite part of our day is circle time, when my students sing "Good Morning" in as many different languages as they can.
They are always very proud to share their language and learn and new one. They often talk about their traditions and speak of distant lands that they are familiar with. What is even more remarkable than sharing a space filled with so much spectacular diversity is understanding and explaining to the young minds how we have come to this movement in time together. My students don't just ponder the question of our world's diversity, they also question origin of the earth's diversity and their social interpersonal place in it. They need the resources that will help guide them on this natural journey towards self knowledge. As each of them attempts to "know thyself" they are honoring the true meaning of the word "Education," which comes from the Latin root, 'educare', meaning to "bring out," or to unleash. My students need the medium to unleash what is within them.
My Project
My students need various items such as Learning to Recycle Kit, Let's Talk Multicultural Puppets and Big Books, Solar System Floor Puzzle etc. to study and honor the vast world around them as they express the depth of the world that exists within them through cultural exploration and self reflection. They will be able to piece together the vast world they live in as they appreciate function and celebrate it's beauty through the puzzles of the world and outer space. They will have an opportunity to not only sing "Good Morning" in a new or familiar native language, they will be able to bring in their own cultural music and self expression to the classroom. They will discover the wonderful geographic features of this earth that exist outside of our view and they will be able to create learning projects that will allow us to vicariously travel to these new and different territories. The children will learn who they are and learn the innermost makings of the mood as well as their mores, they will discover their voice through the writing process. These materials will provide a rich integrated educational experience for the children that is not only reflective of our quickly diversifying nation, but is also respectful of the minds, bodies and spirits of our youth.
My project is cutting edge and reflective of the direction of nation needs to take in the process of educating our youth.
We need to do more than just fill them up with information we need to stimulate their natural intelligence by giving them a platform to explore, express and honor the richness of who they are and this wonderful home we all call Earth.
