My Students
How can students learn if they are hungry? It takes a village to raise a child. I think of these students as my own and want the best for them as I would my own children. The climate at David Ellis Academy makes it a wonderful workplace even though our students live in this bleak economic climate where unemployment and hopelessness reigns. I see the hope and dedication in each student as they strive to reach to new heights. In many cases they are the first hope for making it in life. Every day I have students asking me if I have anything to eat. I would be rich if I had a nickel for every time I was asked for food. That is why this student led project of obtaining and building a greenhouse would extend the growing season and help feed all our hungry students. With bellies full of fresh healthy food learning and concentrating on academics will be much easier.
My Project
This is a cross-curricular student-led school garden project which includes authentic learning. Students will read the building instructions and direct adults in the community how to proceed with their garden greenhouse project. Students will use power tools and measure and build. Students will germinate the seeds and plant the vegetables and fruits in the greenhouse.
This gives all of our students an alternative to the tasteless free lunches.
Imagine having healthy organic fresh foods to eat well into the school year. This will cure the complaints of being hungry. Your donation will make the difference from hearing "I'm hungry" to "Can I pick something to eat?"
