My Students
There is an awful lot of competition for the attention of our students today, so they have many choices other than picking up a book. The most notable draw is the screen, whether games, social networking or Youtube. An e-reader has that screen appeal that our students relate to and want = INCENTIVE.
My students come from a truly staggering array of diverse backgrounds, economically, socially, and ethnically.
There are at least 22 languages spoken in their homes in addition to English. Many students live with single parents or extended family. We have students in roughly equal proportions from the white, Asian, Hispanic and African American communities, all from the nearby neighborhoods serving the school.
We are fortunate as a school community to have a brand new building this year and are excited to have our students be proud of their state of the art facility. Poor people deserve to have every educational advantage that rich private schools enjoy.
These kids will be very excited to have on opportunity to get a new e-reader into their hands. New technology is very engaging! WE gotta keep moving' on up.
My Project
The Denny library sponsors an all school reading program, called the "Dolphin 3 Dozen". (Dolphin is our mascot). Students are encouraged to read a book from the list and then report to the librarian on their reading to have their name place in the weekly drawing. This year I would like to offer winners a week or two with an e-reader, loaded up with all of the books on the list. I think this would build excitement around the reading program and work as an incentive to keep reading.
As I stated in the opening paragraph, there is an awful lot of competition for students attention.
We have to keep up with what is new and exciting to be able to meet students where they are currently so that we have leverage to help move them forward. They absolutely need to hone their reading skills to stay in the game as 21st century students. These devices can lend their appeal to educators efforts.
