I teach at a inner-city school for middle school students. My school has about 85% rate of students who are below the poverty level. Many of the students in my school live in dysfunctional households with some living in shelters or group homes. They receive only the basic necessities for living and nothing extra. I teach 85 students per day as a middle school social studies teacher. I have always dreamed about a classroom library in which I can choose a book from a particular historical era and help them relate to the time period. I would like single copies to use as an introductory piece to a time period and class copies of novels that I would like my students to read. This library could be used yearly and I could share it with the other social studies teachers in my department. I feel my children would benefit by reading high interest material and working on reading comprehension skills which they need to the end of grade testing in our state. I would like to purchase a set of 30 hardcover novels over a five year period. This proposal requests two of those titles. I would like to begin with, "Roll of Thunder" and "Hear My Cry". I would like the teaching guides by the author, as well. I will have 85 students participating and two other teachers have eighth grade social studies classes. We could switch out the different novels for the classes. I am the departmental chairperson and I want this for my children who enjoy reading and can not purchase books or have means to obtain books. Reading is an essential tool to have any type of economic success in the world today. Reading is the basis for academic success in in classroom and so many students grow into adults who have reading comprehension problems.
