My students need a Brainology, a growth mindset curriculum, to help them realize that mistakes are really just an opportunity to learn and that we can succeed with effort.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Can you remember a time when you were given an assignment back only to realize you failed or did not do as well as expected? Even though school is supposed to be a place where we open our minds and brains to all sorts of new knowledge, for many of my students it's a place where they are reminded of their many weaknesses.
Our school is located in a low-income area of Manhattan where a high percentage of our students are immigrants and English language learners or students with disabilities.
As a result, many of these students struggle with academics. Our school yields state test scores that are 15% to 20% below the citywide average. Couple this ongoing struggle in academics with the problems our students face outside of school such as gang life, poverty, and a lack of focus on academics, our students' lives are riddled with obstacles. For most, these obstacles are signs of weaknesses and failure rather than an opportunity for growth.
My Project
Brainology, is a digital curriculum that empowers students to learn about a growth mindset. Over 10 weeks, students will engage in interactive online lessons with animations as they start to change their own attitudes about intelligence. They will understand the science behind a growth mindset by seeing how our brains develop when mistakes our made. I am requesting 34 Brainology for Schools curriculum and online program for my students.
With Brainology, my students will learn the importance of persevering through their many daily struggles.
Instead of becoming frustrated or giving up during academic work, students will encourage each other to see that when we struggle our brains are growing. Over time, the struggles will diminish as students grow to become hard-working, persistent learners.
