Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach 5th grade at an urban, inner city school, with 32 students that range from ages 10 to 11. My students vary in cognitive ability as well as English proficiency. I have created a classroom a community that celebrates and inspires student success. It is a nurturing learning environment where all students can be successful despite the poverty and violence they face in their neighborhood.

Six of my students have moderate to severe learning deficits that effect their ability to read and write. At least one of my students is struggling with Dyslexia, which is an inherited condition that makes it extremely difficult to read, write, and spell in your native language. Research has shown that, while it is still possible to help an older child with reading, those beyond third grade require much more intensive help. In fact, the longer the wait to get help for a child with reading difficulties, the harder it will be for that child to catch up. If help is given in fourth grade (rather than in late kindergarten), it takes four times as long to improve the same skills by the same amount. The odds are stacked against these children, but you can help change that!

Because learning disabilities do not disappear spontaneously, I am dedicated to the remediation of my struggling students through hard work, partnerships, and technology. With the resources I am requesting, students will be provided with systematic, explicit, and intensive instruction in phonemic awareness, phonics, reading fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension strategies.

Probably more than any other subject or skill, a student's future is determined by how well they learn to read and write. Computer technology is an essential tool that enables special need students to develop their skills and experience success in literacy. Not only will you be helping students with learning disabilities, but these resources will benefit the ELL (English Language Learners) students gain understanding and the develop the ability to read and write in English. These tools will be used for many years to come and will impact many lives. PLEASE DONATE TODAY! :)
