This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As a teacher in a low-income/high poverty school, my students are faced with challenges both in and out of the classroom. With these challenges they face, I am looking to provide the most meaningful learning experiences.
I teach at a Title One School in Texas where a 100% of students are on free and reduced breakfast and lunch.
Most of my students receive food for the weekend. Notwithstanding the hardships they receive on a daily basis, my students are eager to learn and do their best to be successful in order to be college ready.
My Project
Dyslexia is a neurological condition caused by a different wiring of the brain. There is no cure for dyslexia and individuals with this condition must learn coping strategies. These students struggle with listening, reading, writing, and spelling. Dyslexia is characterized by difficulties with accurate and/or fluent word recognition and by poor spelling and decoding abilities. These difficulties typically result from a deficit in the phonological component of language that is often unexpected in relation to other cognitive abilities and the provision of effective classroom instruction. Secondary consequences may include problems in reading comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
The donations to this project will help improve the comprehension and reduced reading experience that can impede the growth of vocabulary and background knowledge.
I would like to have the opportunity to expand the resources provided to my students by adding the use of National Geographic magazines as a part of the resources to expand the background knowledge, vocabulary, and comprehension these students lack.
