I feel so fortunate to have the privilege of being a 2nd grade Dual Language Immersion teacher at an incredible elementary school in California. Our school offers a unique Dual Language Immersion program whose goals include helping to foster children’s (1) development of fluency in communication and literacy in two languages, English and Spanish, (2) acquisition of knowledge in all academic subjects, and (3) understanding and appreciation of other cultures, while at the same time inspiring self-esteem and critical thinking. I am thrilled to be part of the Dual Language Immersion program and believe strongly in its goals. My students are amazing! They are learning to read, write, speak and listen in both Spanish and English, as well as reaching for mastery of all academic content standards.
Our school is in Program Improvement for the sixth year in a row, we are a Title I school, and we have many socioeconomically disadvantaged students as well as many second language learners.
My 2nd-grade students are at the critical age. They are learning strong fundamental academic skills. What they learn this year will affect the rest of their educational experience, and so failure is not an option.
My Project
The two Kleenslate Concepts Dry Erase Board System Standard Classroom Packs will be used in my classroom daily! With them, my students will each have access to a dry erase board (complete with a pen and eraser), which they will use for a variety of interactive learning experiences! In a classroom of second language learners, being able to respond in words and/or pictures on a dry erase board is much less intimidating than being asked to speak that second language. Of course, collaborative conversations will organically blossom from the dry erase board responses, but giving the students this first shot at responding non-verbally will really increase student participation.
With help from generous donors like you, my students will be able to respond in an engaging and non-threatening way to prompts during reading/literacy, math, and science learning activities.
For example, during reading instruction, the dry erase boards can be used by students to respond to reading comprehension prompts or to write/draw a description of a particular character or setting. In writing, these amazing boards can be used by students to write/draw and edit an introduction sentence or a description. In language transfer time, the students can use these boards to create lists of cognates or to write dictated sentences. The boards can even be used by students to write/draw a solution to a computation or word problem in math! They can also draw and compare animal life cycles in science. The children will be learning, and developing both their creative and critical thinking skills at the same time. The possibilities are simply endless!!
For today's student, being a participant is not a choice, but rather, a necessity! Please help my students feel empowered to interact and participate in their learning by gifting these dry erase board sets to our classroom!
