Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach ESOL and all of my students speak another language other than English. My school is a Title I School in a suburban area, with over ninety percent of the students qualifying for free or reduced price lunch. I get to know more about who my students are through our daily conversations during ESOL group time. I use a curriculum that creates an atmosphere that allows students to become better equipped in their reading, speaking, and writing skills.

My students are extremely active and are most engaged when they are learning through games and having fun.

I use real world examples that are engaging and meaningful to students. This helps them to bridge their existing background knowledge with the academic background that they need to be successful!

My Project

Having iPads available for my ESOL students will open a world of understanding for them. It will enable them to make real world connections and bridge the gap in their vocabularies. I will be able to provide visual information in an innovative way to help my students be successful.

For students who have limited English skills, these resources will give them the opportunity to share their voice and access the curriculum in a meaningful way.

We will use the resources to practice vocabulary, and access our online curriculum. The iPads will also enable students access to online books, they would otherwise not be able to interact with. Using authentic text in the context where they will see it most, is effective in helping strengthen their skills.
