My students need lab materials and chemicals to create a hands on learning opportunity that will foster a love for Science that lasts long after they leave my classroom.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
Every day begins the same... "Mrs. Hurst is today the day we get to do an experiment"? I am dying to answer that question with a resounding yes!
Our Mission is "to empower students from under-served Baton Rouge communities and prepare them academically and personally for success in college and beyond".
We are the only semi-residential school that is privately funded by generous donations in our state. Our students come to us on Sunday and leave on Friday evening. They cook their own meals and take care of their own building. They come with a dream and desire to be successful. No child attends our school without a determination to be a part of the success that is their future. It must be their choice! They made a great decision and I want them to have every opportunity to fall in love with Science and with the analytical skills it takes to be a productive adult. At our school ALL have an opportunity for the highest quality education around.
My Project
In sixth grade we learn about physical science. This includes force, motion, matter, and elements. This is a huge year of understanding the world around them. My sixth graders are enamored with the thought of manipulating the world around them. By funding this project you are giving my students an opportunity to facilitate chemical changes on their own. To lead their own learning and find out for themselves how molecules come together to create new substances.
In seventh grade it is all about Life Science. I hunt and hopefully during hunting season will be able to provide my own organ specimens for my class. The CSI type investigations, including Extracting Fruit & Vegetable DNA, Forensic Chemistry of Unknown Substances, and Genetics of Blood Types Kit, seeing the Circulatory System Injected Earthworm, and the life cycles of flies and mealworm's will intrigue and foster observation and descriptive skills. My students will love coming in each day to see the changes happening!
Help me to say "yes, this is the day that we will do an experiment".
My students are so excited to learn and I am very ready to assist their learning. With this donation, we can be a part of discovering the world around us and not just observers of video tutorials.
