I am a math teacher in an overcrowded Title One school. Though I service all grades, k-4, I mainly concentrate on the third grade. Another teacher in my school receives a great math magazine called Dynamath. This magazine is published by Scholastic, a very child friendly organization. When I read this magazine I got very excited. This is exactly what my struggling third grade students need. They need a visually appealing, hands on manipulative that changes with the months. The magazine is colorful, and very attractive. It immediately engages the students curiosity. Dynamath weaves different math problems through interesting articles. As I thumbed through the October issue, I couldn't help noticing how the magazine appeals to both boys and girls. For example, creepy calculations are perfect for eight year old boys. I am very sure all the third graders in my school will greatly benefit from this monthly magazine. It introduces math in a way that intrigues all children. They are able to practice, in an engaging method, for that all important New York State test that is haunting many third graders. Dynamath may even enable children to develop a love for math.
