Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am a high school teacher and I love using movies, documentaries, and clips to help my students understand the past.
Movies, documentaries, and video clips help students visualize the past and and humanize the those who lived through it.
From showing a Mayan city-state and the social structure within to a dramatic reenactment of the assassination of the Arch Duke Franz Ferdinand, the visual support is a great way to ignite passion for the subject. One of my favorite documentaries to show is "They Shall Not Grow Old." Filmmaker Peter Jackson used his technology company to smooth out and add color and sound to WWI footage. Students get to see the reality of life on the Western Front.
A number of my students are English language learners. Having visuals, like movies, will support and reinforce their learning. Also, many movies and documentaries have Spanish subtitles. Some students' learning style is visual and the movies help them remember the history.
The lamps and LED lights will allow me to turn off the overhead lights and students will be able to see the assignments that are to be filled out while watching the videos.
