Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I have taught at PS 310 (formerly PS 122) For the past 27 years. In all that time I did not have a Dance Studio. I taught "movement" in the Gym. This year, to my surprise, I have been given a beautiful classroom as my Dance Studio. It is simply an open space, no mirrors, no special dance floor, and yet we make do very nicely. All the students seem to really enjoy their time in my room. I teach K through 3rd grade Dance, and 4th and 5th graders Dance/Theater. That group will be performing Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella in the spring. Most of the students that I teach do not have the financial ability to take advantage of all the arts that NYC has to offer. I wanted to expose my students to a full range of dance styles. To that end, I purchased books, videos and DVDs so that they could see these things for themselves. In my room I have an old 19" television. It has a VCR hooked up to it. That was fine as we watched old videos such as the Nutcracker throughout the holiday season. However for the new year I had purchased some newer DVDs and I didn't have a DVD player in school. When I brought my DVD player from home, I found that the TV was so old that you could not hook up a DVD player to it. Therefore, I am asking for a television that one can hook a DVD player to. I would love it if the TV had a slightly larger screen to make it easier for all the students to be able to see clearly. I will be happy to bring the DVD player from home. I feel that giving my students the chance to see performances that they otherwise would have no way of seeing, might just open their eyes to new and wonderful experiences that there are out there just waiting for them. I saw the complete rapture with which they all (especially the boys ) watched Baryshnakov dance Nutcracker. I know that some of these students have been touched just by that. And that is, after all, what we hope to do as educators- touch a life!
