Our Title I, Tier III School is in a high poverty area just blocks from the Las Vegas strip. Many of my students live in temporary living situations such as hotel rooms or month to month apartments. 100% of my students receive free breakfast and lunch, and some take home a weekend food bag. My students are being raised in a community that is high in crime, and life has dealt them many obstacles. Despite the many hardships that my students face on a day to day basis, they come to school with optimism and a strong desire to learn. This is my second year as a teacher and I am slowly starting to obtain classroom materials to make my classroom a safe haven for my students. I want them to be excited about learning, and excited about their futures. Help me inspire these children to reach for their dreams!
My Project
Technology/computer time, is an essential part of the day in my first grade classroom. My students use special reading and math programs which track their growth throughout the year. Not only does the technology in my classroom teach reading and math, but it also assists my Spanish speakers with learning English. I currently have five English Language Learners in my classroom. Three of these ELL students have just arrived from Cuba. Technology is imperative in helping these little ones learn new English vocabulary. Their eyes light up when it's their turn to use the computer!
Headphones are necessary to ensure that my students can hear their computer based reading and math lessons.
Unfortunately, my classroom has one working set of headphones left. We are in desperate need of durable headphones that will be comfortable and functional. Headphones ensure that my students can focus on their customized lessons. My students rotate stations in groups of five. As you can imagine, five computers without headphones creates an environment which is too noisy, and my students complain often that they can't hear their lesson.
