This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 150 motivated students who want to learn everything about anything. This will be their first experience in a middle school setting. Many of the students come from a low socioeconomic background, with limited resources available. Sparks Middle School, built in 1965, is a Title I school in Nevada, serving 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students with 100% participation in the free breakfast and lunch program.
My sixth and seventh grade science students are incredible and eager to learn with the materials that are given to them and what their teacher can provide.
Students are grouped in teams to build relationships with faculty, staff, and their peers. This allows them to keep the same core set of teachers who will stay with them for their entire middle school journey. Team Texas is home to a diverse group of students.
My Project
My students use composition books in science on a daily basis. They put all their science work inside these books, and they have to last for several months. With the daily wear and tear, the composition books begin looking very sad by the end of the year. Having these rolls of duct tape with printed pictures on them will allow the students to wrap the covers of their composition notebooks and make them much more sturdy.
By allowing them to pick colorful duct tape with patterns, the students can personalize their notebooks to their satisfaction, allowing them to take pride in their notebooks.
Since many of my students are not able to supply their own duct tape, this will make it possible for each student to be able to decorate their notebooks in a way that is meaningful to them.
