This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Think back to when you were a middle school student. What did you think about your Science classes? I'm guessing your most memorable experiences were the hands-on ones. Sadly, my kids don't have many opportunities for hands-on experiences and I want to help change that.
I teach in an inner-city, high poverty school that is comprised of 97% minority families.
We have 96% free and reduced lunch. Even though we live in a great city that has a zoo and museums, my students live far from them and do not have the resources to visit these places. Some have never even been to the zoo. To them, a squirrel is a wild animal because they have not seen anything else up close.
My Project
I am trying to teach my students the different life cycles of animals. Thankfully, through Donors Choose, we were able to observe African Dwarf frogs' and Praying Mantis' life cycles. I want to extend these studies to the chicken, duck, and quail. Unfortunately, the school can not afford to provide these materials.
Developing inquiry skills in Science will allow my students to be successful in today's Science and Math driven world.
These materials will help students think about life outside of their neighborhood and engage in Science in a more meaningful way. Sure, we could read about life cycles in a book, but the kids will gain so much more from being able to hold and observe eggs developing in front of their own eyes. Please help me make Science more memorable and enjoyable for my students!
