Dual Novels: Locomotion and Freak the Mighty for Engaged Learning
Help me give my students a class set of Locomotion and Freak the Mighty so that each student has their own copy of the book to read during our novel studies!
Teachers at my school were recently tasked with choosing the ten books that changed or challenged the way we think. As I reflected on my personal choices, many of the books were those I'd explored in classrooms during my own middle grade years. In our fifth-grade classrooms, we are excited to integrate "Locomotion" and "Freak the Mighty" into our curriculum, and offering each student their own copy of these novels will help to provide a more transformative experience.
With their own copies in hand, students engage more intimately with the material, following along while their teacher and classmates read, and revisiting pivotal moments.
Through the Socratic Seminar model, students will participate in dynamic and thoughtful discussions with their peers guided by the exploration of comprehension questions. By engaging in collaborative dialogue, students develop not only their critical thinking skills but also their ability to empathize with diverse perspectives and respectfully challenge assumptions. Rhetoric is an important component of a liberal arts education, an important component of our school's mission.
Our primary aim is to empower students as confident, independent readers, writers, and critical thinkers. By immersing them in literature, we foster a lifelong love for learning that extends far beyond the classroom walls. While students will not keep their copies, the impact of these stories will stay with them. Maybe "Locomotion" or "Freak the Mighty" will find itself on the list of books that impacted one of my own students.
By supporting this project, you're not just investing in the intellectual and personal growth of our current students--these novels will continue to enrich the minds of future cohorts. Thank you for considering my Donors Choose project. <3
