This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Jacqueline Kennedy once said, "There are many little ways to enlarge your child's world. Love of books is the best of all." This love of reading is difficult to instill in this time of technology, TV, and video games. My students need access to quality books in Spanish.

My students are all Spanish speakers entering 1st grade in a Dual Language program.

The goal of this program is for my students to read, write, and speak in both Spanish and English. They attend an urban school in Connecticut. My students are bright, energetic and smart. They are eager to learn, and need to be provided with interesting, challenging books to read. As I will be moving into this classroom, I want my students to have all the materials they need to develop a love of reading.

My Project

By having a bright colorful rug, it provides our class with a space to meet during the day to share stories, as well as our thoughts and questions. The integrated language and vocabulary in this rug will reinforce concepts that are taught in our lessons. This meeting space is important for our classroom community...we are a family and this will be our "meeting place." The books will be used to reinforce the concepts we are learning in science and social studies. They will be used to read with a partner, and expand the students' Spanish vocabulary. They will also be used with the English speaking students learning Spanish. These books must be colorful, high-interest and linked to our high standards for literacy, science, and social studies.

This project is the beginning of inspiring a life-long love of reading and language in my students.

Today much of our population is bilingual. It is shown that students who can read and write in two languages perform better in their school career. These materials will help to 1) help them to love reading, 2) improve reading comprehension, 3) help them to learn important concepts in science and social studies, and 4) to help us create a family community in our classroom. Please help us!
