Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

While my school is labeled as "moderate poverty", 90-100% of the students in the bilingual program are on the free/reduced price lunch program yearly.

No matter their lives at home, my students come to my class with smiles on their faces, eager to see what learning I have on the agenda for the day.

Our students are eager to learn and eager to please. We are blessed with the opportunity to help our students grow the gift of two languages that they have. This project will help to provide materials that they need for instruction. They deserve it!

My Project

Over the next few years, my campus is transitioning from a bilingual program to a dual language program for our English Language Learner students whose home language is Spanish. In the new program model, we are moving towards teaching students to become equally bi-literate in both English and Spanish.

Have you ever caught yourself attempting to explain a situation or tell a story and find that the word that you are looking for has just slipped your mind?

Imagine if that were to happen in two languages. In the past, I have seen that there are students who struggle with vocabulary in both English and in Spanish, an academic gap that sometimes happens when students have yet to develop foundational vocabulary in their home language. With your project donations, I would like to put more dictionaries in the hands of my students in Spanish so that they are able to develop vocabulary in their native language. While growing their native language skills, I would also be able to help them to transfer their knowledge to English.
