My students need high-interest, grade level books in English and Spanish, including book collections like Cam Jansen and the Hardy Boys, in order to continue developing their biliteracy in the Dual Language Program (DLP).
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Imagine being enrolled in a program that enhances the development of bilingualism, biculturalism, and biliteracy. My students have the fortune of being enrolled in a Dual Language Program (DLP) as they develop their literacy in two languages. They need a plethora of books in English and Spanish.
Who are my students?
My students are brimming with potential. Since the students are enrolled in a DLP, English learners and English proficient students are mixed in the same classroom and receive instruction in English and Spanish. As third graders, they are now reading to learn and have just begun to understand the magic of books. They attend an urban, Title I school in Southern California. The students come predominately from working class households. What the students lack economically, they make up for in spirit and determination.
My Project
The literature I am requesting will help instill a love of reading. Through reading my students will also reach grade level standards such as fluency in reading and reading comprehension skills. But more importantly, high-interest books in English and Spanish will keep them inspired and motivated. Continuos reading will aid in developing a high academic proficiency in two languages. This will ultimately give them an edge in the future. Great literature will develop life long readers and learners.
Please donate to help my students fall in love with great books.
These young students have an amazing opportunity of becoming readers not only in one language but two. Great literature can have such a positive impact on young readers.
