My Students

I teach art at a small elementary school in Brooklyn, NY for students with severe disabilities. The students in my school are between five and eleven years old. There are thirteen 6:1:1 classes (6 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional) and one 12:1:1 class (12 students, 1 teacher, 1 paraprofessional).

Most of the students in my school have Autism Spectrum Disorder, but that doesn't stop them from being amazing and unique individuals.

My students are budding artists. They enjoy learning about new materials and methods that they can use to express themselves.

My Project

I am in the process of re-vitalizing the Art Program at my school. We lack a lot of the things that a typical art program has which limits the materials that we can use, particularly projects that require materials to dry.

Having a spring-loaded drying rack will allow us to explore new materials in the art room.

Having a safe place for students to place work that needs drying time means that my students will be able work with different painting materials such as watercolors and tempra paints. Having a drying rack will also mean that we can explore a variety of print-making techniques, expanding our Art Program.
