There is never a dull day in 5th grade. We have 28 students in the classroom, most just coming to the United States within the past two to three years. There is not a day that goes by that I don't marvel at how strong these children are coming from situations and places that would test the strongest adult. Yes, they are resilient.
The students learn English quickly and put so much effort into reading and writing English every day.
They translate to their parents to keep them informed about what is going on in the classroom and what they are learning. The cultural diversity in our classroom is inspiring as the children work together. We talk about how we have different customs and yet how much the same we all are. It's a great place to teach and I learn from the children every day.
My Project
With virtual learning, it has been so helpful to have the students use whiteboards. I delivered whiteboards to all the students with 5 markers but already they have begun to run out. Most of my families do not have cars and are unable to get out to replenish their supplies.
Markers are always in demand and we need a constant supply of them.
Using the whiteboards helps us so clearly see how the students are writing and completing their math problems. They also get a feeling of being back in the classroom as these are our number one tool. To be able to freshen up the supply after the first of the year will take us through these tough months ahead.
