Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I am an educator in a low-income/high poverty school district. As a result my students are faced with several challenges both in and out of the classroom. Despite the many challenges they face, they are an impressively positive bunch. Their energy is displayed in their motivation, teamwork, and worth ethic, evidenced in the several projects my students have completed this year. For example, groups have created balloon-powered cars, 3D printed medical tools, video games (coded by them!), Android apps, models of the solar system, and graphic novels showcasing math content.

My goal as an educator is to have my 5th and 6th graders develop a sense of responsibility for their education and carry a growth mindset.

This combination will ensure that my students will become life-long learners who are self-motivated and ready to tackle the problems of tomorrow.

My Project

I have found that my students retain new math content best through interactive direct instruction. The use of dry-erase markers and boards makes this possible. My students love this time because I allow them to be active participants and even come up and teach the class.

Also, this is when I try to be as energetic and enthusiastic as humanly possible.

Unfortunately, my dry erase marker supply is running very, for lack of a better word, dry. This donation will allow me to replenish my supply and keep my students learning. Also, the pencils will be put to good use as they will be shared amongst our 5-8 grade students.
