We are a classroom of amazing 3rd grade students in Des Moines, Iowa. We set high expectations each and every day, and work hard to achieve them. As a teacher, I work hard to challenge them each day through authentic learning experiences. The kids take ownership and responsibility for all aspects of our classroom. We strive to be calm, balanced, and focused in all we do.
Ours is a Turnaroud Arts school, which means we teach all subjects through the arts.
My students come from a variety of backgrounds, so this is a great way to reach everyone and provide multiple opportunities for learning.
My Project
I have chosen a variety of dry erase materials that would greatly benefit my students. Research shows that students are more likely to at least begin a task when using dry erase boards and markers over pencils and paper. It seems that this method is less intimidating because it is less permanent. If a mistake is made, they can quickly erase and try something else.
Fluency is of course a huge focus in my third grade classroom!
I use a system called 6 Minute Solution where students read aloud with a partner who listens and marks any words read incorrectly. After one minute, they tally the correct words read per minute. The goal is to read the same passage each day to increase their words per minute. For this activity they put the passages in a sleeve and mark with dry erase so they can be reused each day. What I have now is looking very old and hard for students to read through. Thank you for helping me replace these items!
