Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
The NGSS science standards ask students to develop 8 practices, one of which is Developing and Using Models. For example, MS-ESS1-1, Earth's Place in the universe asks students to develop and use a model of the Earth-moon-sun system to describe cyclic patterns of lunar phases, eclipses of the sun and moon, and seasons.
For students to develop a model, they need lots of practice drawing those models without the fear of making a mistake.
Using dry erase boards to practice scientific concepts takes away the pressure of getting it right the first time. Paper and pen can be intimidating, but a dry erase board can be easily erased as students develop and change their models to reflect their increasing scientific understanding of concepts.
Please help my 8th graders have the opportunity to safely draw their models, as they learn to see not only the patterns of Earth, moon and sun, but also other abstract scientific concepts that are difficult to understand, like the flow of energy in a system, the transfer of waves through a medium, and the structural changes to genes in a mutation.
Not only will my 8th graders use the dry erase boards to draw their models, but for any activity that helps students process their thinking with eview games, think-pair-shares, gallery walks, mind maps, and many other strategies that let's students process, retrieve, and question the NGSS standards.
