My Students
I teach Freshmen Health Ed and there is unit on drugs and their effects on the body. The number of students that do not consider alcohol as a drug amazes me. Is it because we have socialized this particular drug? My students are wonderfully inquisitive and love to experience lessons by doing activities that may relate to the topic I am teaching. Students are new to the school and transitioning into a new school with a lot of doubts and struggles in fitting into a life after middle school.
I try making topics relevant to their everyday lives.
All of my students care about each other and inherently care about the community they are living in and are always trying to find ways to improve it. I work with each student individually to help them communicate, become responsible people in their communities and to help them understand their visions for their future success. My students practice building a community within class so they can understand what that means in the world beyond school and understanding harm reduction strategies will help them at this.
My Project
Students will be wearing goggles while trying to make a basket using a basketball, kicking a soccer ball in order to make a goal, and/or riding a bike. This will be done while teaching about various drugs and their effects on the body. The goggles will help 105 students learn about alcohol and get a better understanding of alcohol and its effects on vision and physical abilities.
Drinking and driving is dangerous and this activity will help students to better understand how drinking can effect a community.
Students will see the difference in their own ability on a physical activity sober and simulating being drunk.
