My Students

Think back to your elementary music experience. Were their instruments like drums for you to practice a steady beat or even create your own rhythms on? How exciting would that have been? I am hoping to provide the students at my school with an unforgettable experience. You can help!

I teach at a rural public elementary school in NC.

There are about 450 students here ranging from 5 to 12 years old. We are mostly middle-low economic class. You could describe us as a typical country school. Our students are very sweet but most are sheltered in their experiences. Some have never been out of the county.

My Project

I am hoping to build the school's music instrument supply to give our students an unforgettable music experience. There are so many activities that we can do with drums. We can create drum circles which enable us to practice beats, rhythms, and improvisations. We can add more songs to our repertoire by having drum accompaniment. We can create sound stories with sound effects provided by the drums.

By adding more instruments I will be able to reach more students.

Not all students enjoy singing but having more instruments for them to play may awaken something inside them. By encouraging a love for music through drumming, a life-long activity could be born. My students will leave me and go on to join the band in middle and high school. They may pursue private lessons. The love of playing an instrument may lead them to discover other instruments.
