The students here at JWIS and EPS are some of the musically interested students I have ever had the chance to teach. Their desire to learn goes farther than "I want to learn the cool song on the radio." or "I sing at church." These students want to create! And who am I to deny them any opportunity to create music?
While these students go to a Title I school, they shouldn't have to feel like it in their music class.
These students love to create and explore the different sounds the world has to offer. They are intrigued with Ms. Colby's drum she plays to get their feet moving and they want to get their hands on their own (who could blame them?). I want to give these students musical experiences every other student around the country gets, and maybe a few more!
My Project
Drums are a way to connect our students to all styles of music and culture. From the pounding bass drums of Queen, to the Celtic bodhran drums of Ireland and Scotland, and even the up turned metal mixing bowls played with wooden spoons on the kitchen floor, we can all connect to the pulse of a beating drum. It beats in our very core and children are no exception.
I only have 12 hand drums of various sizes for my music classes.
These classes range in size from three 4-year-olds to twenty-six 5th graders. While my students are understanding and know that we have to share, having two students share a 6 inch drum is difficult no matter how small your hands are!
We use drumming in so many different ways. For the smallest feet, we use the drum to keep the steady beat. For the busiest hands, we learn rhythms of our favorite songs. For the most inquisitive minds, we improvise and create our own rhythmic pieces. Drums are crucial in any music classroom. They inspire a love of rhythm and creation. Please help the students of Jeter-Watson Intermediate and Edgemont Primary Schools gain high quality drums that will last for the next generations.
