Drumming Up STEAM

My students need need African drums in order to allow more students to drum at a time.

My Students

My students come from a low income area. We are now 100% free and reduced lunch because of the high level of poverty in our area. So many of the students come to school without the supplies they need. We do the best we can to provide for them with the limits that we have. As the music teacher, I see every student in the school and I'm able to give all students the chance to experience music in many ways.

My students LOVE to drum and create rhythms, but we are limited by the number of drums we have.

My Project

Many of my students come from a low income family. They don't all get the same experiences as some of their higher income friends. Students are often seen drumming out amazing rhythms and beats with pencils, hands, feet, and anything they can get a hold of. They love drumming and creating their own rhythms. We've been adding more and more drumming to our lessons and I'm often surprised by the students' creativity and team work.

We do not have enough African drums for all students to drum at the same time.

As of right now, students take turns using our 7 drums that we have (2 were DonorsChoose donations and are amazing). We would love to have 3 more drums to add allowing 10 students to drum at a time. This would allow us to have more time at the drums and less time spent taking turns.

While drumming students learn math and fractions with rhythms. They learn teamwork and cooperation as they work together to keep a steady beat. They are also engineers and thinkers as they create their own rhythms for the group. It's very exciting to see.
