My Project
I am fortunate enough to work with more than 850 wonderful, creative children as a music specialist who's job it is to integrate core academic subjects with the engaging power of music. Every day, we dance, sing, and play our way from one personal success to another and the drums I'm hoping to receive will help me continue the transformative work that I do. I am going to use them to help younger students as well as English language learners practice syllables and sound out word "chunks" as they learn to read. When a child sees a word on the board, it's easy to "play" that word on the drums and count the syllables as well as drum the sounds they hear when they decode those same words. Magic happens when you seamlessly connect both body and mind!
My long term goal is to improve literacy and reading fluency one drummer at a time by having students play sounds and syllables on floor drums as they read in tandem.
Children often learn in unconventional ways and drumming is an excellent example of that. No one can deny the joy a child feels when they immerse themselves in music. Now, meld that joy with the undeniable satisfaction of succeeding academically, and you have a winning combination that's pretty hard to "beat"! Get it? That's me being "punny"!
