Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The students and community I serve come from diverse backgrounds and often low-economic households where over 70% of the student body qualifies for free and reduced lunch making it hard for me to ask the community to help fund classroom items.

When my students come to music I hope to create an environment that allows everyone to learn while having fun, feeling safe, and offering creative outlets for students to engage and connect with an art form that brings us together- Music.

Because I am a 'Specials' educator and not a general classroom educator it is even more difficult for me to ask students and their families to help bring in classroom essentials (pencils, tissues, etc.); because of this, my budget must be split between these classroom necessities and musical additions (instruments, manipulatives, new music, etc.) used to enhance and broaden our learning experiences. Funding a project like this on a platform like DonorsChoose allows my program to grow in ways it could not normally do so.

My Project

To introduce drumming and essential, foundational musical concepts I am raising funds for a large gathering drum for our classroom. Students in Kickstart, Kindergarten, and First Grade will be learning about, exploring, and experiencing vital foundational music concepts that include, but are not limited to beat, rhythm, and basic instrument playing skills and maintenance. Additionally, social concepts such as playing together, taking turns, and teamwork are also experienced through many of these music room activities.

To help us learn these essential foundational concepts together we should have a drum large enough for us to experience this learning together as well.

This gathering drum is nearly two feet wide and will allow several of my younger and smaller students to be able to explore these musical and social concepts simultaneously, where many can see and partake in this new and continuing learning together.
